Today I am continuing the search for an alternative to my SMF forum Discussion Group. I have spent a lot of time, other people's time as well, and a fair amount of money. None of my investigations have produced the perfect solution.
This solution, hosted by ActiveBoard, is looking very promising.

So this would be my reply to the post quoted above. This is pretty straightforward and I think I am liking the way this functions. I also was able as administrator to really get in and edit the entire style sheet ... I just didn't go too far with that because I am not that knowledgeable about CSS (but I know I can get help on this).
There is certainly a lot to like about this forum. It is a hosted service and it seems to be very fast and responsive. I believe they have really fast server clusters since they evidently have a lot of really high powered clients running huge discussion boards.
The user interface is a little bit more cluttered than I might like but not nearly as busy as some of them. I still need to see how easy it is to upload images and stuff like that.
One thing I notice is that the avatars are HUGE! All the profile stuff seems to display larger than I would expect. Now, the thing I can never remember, forum to forum, is how images are handled. I am going to see right now.
So, you can choose images from your computer if you use the Add Attachment routine. Once uploaded you can choose to either attach it or insert it (and you an alert or notice to that effect). What you see below is inserted in the post.

So now I am comparing the 2 hosted solutions, ActiveBoard (this forum here) and the newly discovered websitetoolbox.com service. ActiveBoard presents a few more features but that makes the screen a little busier. Websitetoolbox has just as many features but they are accessed differently. The other big factor is COST. ActiveBoard is more expensive.
It's tough to assess the differences. They are both very good and both are certainly worthy alternatives to my Discussion Group. I still need to discover a few more things about how THIS forum works.

This ActiveBoard forum is in the number 2 position behind websitetoolbox forum. I like almost everything about this one except that the screens are a little busy --- too many buttons clutter the screen. The good points are a full wysiwyg editor, easy uploading of images, support for video embeds and lots of other things.
I think I am prepaid on this for about 3 months and then I will have to decide whether to keep it going, just in case it is needed, or drop it altogether.
